Questions

Before you order

Which size should I choose?

For adults, Large fits most men and about half of women, and Medium suits teenagers and smaller faces. Children from 4 use Small. Measure your mouth from corner to corner and check the size guide on each product page.

Can I talk, cough or drink water with it on?

Yes. The opening in the middle means your mouth is never fully sealed, so you can talk, cough, sneeze or take a sip of water without taking it off.

How long should I use it?

Breathing habits take time to change. We recommend wearing it every night for 60 to 90 nights, which is why the three-month pack is the most popular.

Can I use a strip more than once?

No. Each strip is single use, for hygiene and so the adhesive holds properly.

I have a beard or moustache. Will it stick?

The standard strip will not hold on facial hair. Choose MyoTape for Beards, which has a stronger adhesive made for it.

Is MyoTape a treatment for sleep apnoea?

No. MyoTape supports nasal breathing during sleep and can help with snoring caused by mouth breathing. It is not a treatment for sleep apnoea and does not replace CPAP. If you have been diagnosed, or think you might have it, speak to your doctor before using mouth tape.

Who should not use it?

Do not use MyoTape after alcohol, drugs or sedative medication, if you feel sick or may vomit, or if you cannot breathe comfortably through your nose. It is not suitable for children under 4.

MyoTape Adult: A Professional Solution for Nasal Breathing and Myofunctional Therapy

Introduction to MyoTape Adult

In recent years, the importance of correct breathing has gained increasing recognition. While nasal breathing is the body’s natural way of breathing, many adults unconsciously adopt the habit of mouth breathing, which is associated with dry mouth, snoring and poorer sleep quality.

MyoTape Adult was developed as a mouth tape that supports nasal breathing in a gentle and non-invasive way. Unlike conventional adhesive mouth tapes that fully seal the lips, MyoTape Adult gently surrounds them, bringing them together while allowing the user to open the mouth if necessary. This makes it a practical tool for adults following myofunctional therapy programmes or simply looking to breathe through the nose during rest and sleep.

This article provides an overview of MyoTape Adult, explaining how it works, its benefits, and how it can be used alongside dental, orthodontic and myofunctional therapy programmes.

The Science Behind MyoTape Adult

MyoTape Adult was designed by Patrick McKeown, internationally recognised breathing expert and creator of the Oxygen Advantage® method. The tape was specifically engineered to support nasal breathing without forcing the lips shut. This is an important difference from tapes that fully cover the lips.

The product works by applying a gentle elastic tension around the lips. This encourages lip closure, stimulating the muscles of the orofacial complex and reinforcing the natural habit of breathing through the nose.

Nasal breathing has several natural functions:

  • Filtration of inhaled air through the nasal passages.

  • Humidification and temperature regulation, protecting the lungs.

  • Production of nitric oxide, which plays a role in normal airway function.

  • Calmer breathing, as nasal breathing tends to be slower and more regular.

By supporting the lips in a closed but relaxed position, MyoTape Adult supports nasal breathing and can be used as part of myofunctional therapy programmes.

Key Benefits of MyoTape Adult

Supporting Nasal Breathing in Adults

Adults who habitually breathe through the mouth may experience dry mouth and snoring. MyoTape Adult provides a simple, gentle tool to encourage nasal breathing and help train lip closure.

The tape can be particularly useful for:

  • Adults with mild to moderate mouth breathing habits.

  • Patients in orthodontic treatment who want to support lip closure.

  • Individuals participating in myofunctional therapy programs.

Improving Sleep Quality and Reducing Snoring

Snoring is often linked to mouth breathing during sleep. By gently training the lips to remain together, MyoTape Adult can reduce mouth breathing at night and the snoring it causes, for more restful sleep.

Many users also notice less dry mouth in the morning. MyoTape is not a treatment for sleep apnoea: anyone who suspects sleep apnoea should see a doctor.

Complementing Myofunctional Therapy

Dentists and orofacial myologists frequently prescribe myofunctional therapy to correct tongue posture, swallowing patterns, and breathing habits. MyoTape Adult can be used alongside these programmes as a practical at-home tool that reinforces therapeutic exercises.

By supporting the correct lip seal, MyoTape Adult helps patients integrate therapeutic outcomes into daily life, ensuring that progress achieved in clinical sessions is consolidated outside of the clinic.

How MyoTape Adult Works in Practice

Using MyoTape Adult is straightforward and well tolerated by most adults.

  1. Application: The tape is gently placed around the lips, not directly over them. The central area remains free, ensuring that patients can part their lips if necessary.

  2. First use: Before the first night, wear a strip for 15 to 20 minutes during the day while awake to check comfort and skin tolerance.

  3. Night-time use: Once comfortable, patients can use the tape during sleep to support nasal breathing through the night.

  4. Integration with therapy: Dentists and therapists often recommend MyoTape Adult in combination with myofunctional therapy or orthodontic treatment.

Each strip is single use. The hypoallergenic adhesive is gentle on the skin, and the strip can be removed easily at any time.

MyoTape Adult in Clinical Contexts

Applications in Dentistry

Dentists and orthodontists recognise the impact of breathing habits on oral comfort and lip function. MyoTape Adult can be used as part of myofunctional programmes for adult patients.

Applications include:

  • Orthodontics: Supporting lip closure during and after treatment.

  • Prosthodontics: Supporting better oral function in patients rehabilitated with prosthetic devices.

  • General practice: As part of programmes that encourage nasal breathing and reduce morning dry mouth.

Snoring and Sleep

MyoTape Adult is not a treatment for sleep apnoea and does not replace CPAP or medical care. People with diagnosed or suspected sleep apnoea should use it only if their doctor approves. It can be useful for people with:

  • Snoring caused by mouth breathing.

  • Morning dry mouth.

  • Sleep fragmentation due to mouth breathing.

By supporting nasal breathing, the tape can help users sleep more comfortably.

Frequently Asked Questions about MyoTape Adult

Is MyoTape Adult safe to use at night?
Yes, for most adults. The tape does not cover the lips completely, leaving a central opening that allows the mouth to open if necessary, and it can be removed easily at any time. Do not use it with a blocked nose, cold or sinus infection, after alcohol or sedatives, or if there is a risk of nausea or vomiting.

Can patients breathe through the mouth while wearing MyoTape Adult?
Yes, if necessary. The product is designed to encourage nasal breathing but does not obstruct oral airflow entirely.

Is MyoTape Adult suitable for patients with sleep apnoea?
MyoTape Adult is not a treatment for sleep apnoea. People with diagnosed or suspected sleep apnoea should use it only if their doctor approves, and it does not replace CPAP or medical care.

Does MyoTape Adult cause skin irritation?
The hypoallergenic adhesive is well tolerated by most people. Before the first night, wear a strip for 15 to 20 minutes during the day to check skin tolerance, and do not apply it to irritated or broken skin.
