Questions

Before you order

Which size should I choose?

For adults, Large fits most men and about half of women, and Medium suits teenagers and smaller faces. Children from 4 use Small. Measure your mouth from corner to corner and check the size guide on each product page.

Can I talk, cough or drink water with it on?

Yes. The opening in the middle means your mouth is never fully sealed, so you can talk, cough, sneeze or take a sip of water without taking it off.

How long should I use it?

Breathing habits take time to change. We recommend wearing it every night for 60 to 90 nights, which is why the three-month pack is the most popular.

Can I use a strip more than once?

No. Each strip is single use, for hygiene and so the adhesive holds properly.

I have a beard or moustache. Will it stick?

The standard strip will not hold on facial hair. Choose MyoTape for Beards, which has a stronger adhesive made for it.

Is MyoTape a treatment for sleep apnoea?

No. MyoTape supports nasal breathing during sleep and can help with snoring caused by mouth breathing. It is not a treatment for sleep apnoea and does not replace CPAP. If you have been diagnosed, or think you might have it, speak to your doctor before using mouth tape.

Who should not use it?

Do not use MyoTape after alcohol, drugs or sedative medication, if you feel sick or may vomit, or if you cannot breathe comfortably through your nose. It is not suitable for children under 4.

MyoTape: A Complete Solution for Nasal Breathing and Myofunctional Therapy

Introduction to MyoTape

Breathing is a fundamental function that influences overall well-being. While nasal breathing is the body’s natural way of breathing, a significant proportion of adults and children habitually breathe through the mouth. Mouth breathing is associated with problems such as dry mouth, snoring and poorer sleep quality.

MyoTape is a mouth tape designed to support nasal breathing in a gentle, non-invasive way. Unlike adhesive tapes that seal the mouth, MyoTape gently surrounds the lips, bringing them together while leaving the centre of the mouth open. This design allows users, both adults and children, to breathe comfortably while helping train lip closure and nasal breathing.

This article offers a complete overview of the MyoTape range, including MyoTape Adult and MyoTape Kids, explaining how it works, its key benefits, and how it is used alongside dental, orthodontic and myofunctional therapy programmes.

The Science Behind MyoTape

MyoTape was developed by Patrick McKeown, internationally renowned breathing expert and author of the Oxygen Advantage®. Its purpose is to provide a gentler alternative to taping methods that fully cover the lips, helping users move from mouth breathing to nasal breathing.

The tape is made from elastic, hypoallergenic material and works by gently bringing the lips together. It does not obstruct oral airflow completely, meaning users can still open their mouths if necessary.

The physiological advantages of nasal breathing include:

  • Air filtration: The nasal passages filter dust, bacteria, and allergens.

  • Humidification and temperature regulation: Protecting the lower respiratory tract.

  • Nitric oxide production: The nose produces nitric oxide, which plays a role in normal airway function.

  • Calmer breathing: Nasal breathing tends to be slower and more regular.

By retraining the body towards nasal breathing, MyoTape supports healthier breathing habits for children and adults alike.

Key Benefits of MyoTape

For Adults: MyoTape Adult

  • Supports nasal breathing: Helping adults overcome habitual mouth breathing.

  • Supports restful sleep: Can reduce the snoring caused by mouth breathing and morning dry mouth.

  • Complements therapy: Used alongside orthodontic and myofunctional therapy programmes.

  • Comfort for the mouth: Less mouth breathing can mean less dry mouth in the morning.

For Children: MyoTape Kids

  • Encourages healthy habits: Nasal breathing is associated with healthy oral development, as your dentist or orthodontist can explain.

  • Supports restful sleep: Helps children keep their lips closed and breathe through the nose at night.

  • Adjunct to therapy: Ideal for use alongside orthodontic and myofunctional therapy.

  • Ages 4 to 16: Always used under adult supervision, ideally with guidance from a dentist or myofunctional therapist.

How MyoTape Works in Practice

MyoTape is simple to use and suitable for both daytime and night-time application.

  1. Application: The tape is placed around the lips, leaving the centre free.

  2. First use: Before the first night, wear a strip for 15 to 20 minutes during the day while awake to check comfort and skin tolerance.

  3. Night-time use: Once adapted, MyoTape is used during sleep, supporting nasal breathing throughout the night.

  4. Therapy integration: Clinicians often prescribe MyoTape as part of orthodontic, dental, or myofunctional programs.

Each strip is single use. The hypoallergenic adhesive is gentle on the skin, the elastic design promotes comfort, and the strip can be removed easily at any time.

MyoTape in Clinical Contexts

Dentistry and Orthodontics

Dentists and orthodontists increasingly recognise the influence of breathing habits on oral health. MyoTape provides a practical adjunct to:

  • Orthodontics: Supporting lip closure during and after treatment.

  • Everyday comfort: Helping reduce morning dry mouth caused by mouth breathing.

  • Healthy habits in children: Nasal breathing is associated with healthy oral development, as your dentist or orthodontist can explain.

Snoring and Sleep

MyoTape is not a treatment for sleep apnoea and does not replace CPAP or medical care. Anyone who suspects sleep apnoea should see a doctor. For people who breathe through the mouth at night, MyoTape can help:

  • Reduce the snoring caused by mouth breathing.

  • Reduce morning dry mouth.

  • Build a consistent nasal breathing habit.

Myofunctional Therapy

Orofacial myologists and speech therapists often integrate MyoTape into therapy protocols. It reinforces lip seal and tongue posture training, ensuring that progress in therapy sessions continues at home.
